Sitting on a bluff overlooking the Willamette River, Sellwood-Moreland is a combined neighborhood of the Moreland area and the former town of Sellwood, which was annexed into the city of Portland in 1893. Even so, the area has retained its individuality and charm, even maintaining its local newspaper, The Sellwood Bee. Sellwood-Moreland is connected to the east side of the city by way of the Sellwood Bridge, the most southern bridge in Portland, and the area enjoys upscale neighbors including Eastmoreland and Westmoreland.

Sellwood-Moreland is not as rife with young hipsters as other parts of the city, such as north Portland, but it distinguishes itself with a laid-back attitude that welcomes all comers. Residents are not afraid to be who they are and speak their mind, and this fosters a community of people that are open with one another.
Homes in Sellwood-Moreland are rife with many of the older architectural styles that are found throughout east Portland. These include cottage-style, Craftsman and Victorian homes, among others. A number of local and vibrant business serve the area, including eclectic coffee houses like the Ugly Mug and a bevy of excellent restaurants.
Sellwood-Moreland is well-known for its abundance of upscale antique shops operating in its community, many of which reside on the self-named Antique Row on 13th Avenue. The neighborhood is home to a small amusement park called Oaks Park as well as a number of private properties, including Sellwood Park, Sellwood Pool, Sellwood Community Center, Sellwood Community Garden and Sellwood Riverfront Park.
